We all have different ideas about journeys. The journey through life, the cooking journey, the journey through the wildernessโฆ mine is the journey of weaving large bead tapestries on a loom.
Along our journeys, we sometimes have guides or experts leading us along the way. In the realm of bead weaving, specifically large pieces on a loom, there are very few guides and experts to help us along.
And so we find ourselves learning from trial and error all on our own. Sometimes we get frustrated and give up entirely.
There is no repository of knowledge on bead weaving large tapestry pieces on the loom, that I could find scouring the internet anyway. And believe you me, I have scoured the web trying to find them!! There are however amazing and very talented large-scale bead tapestry weavers out there. I will be talking about their art on this blog.
So to help my bead weaving brethren along the path to bead weaving large pieces on a loomโฆ I have started this website offering patterns I have designed and created this blog to serve as the guide.
So hello and welcome!!
The Aim Of This Blog
This blog aims to help with making information about Large scale tapestry weaving on a loom more accessible.
Bead weaving large pieces on a loom can be done, quite easily. It only demands more patience than the smaller pieces and a few different methods. One such method is weaving the larger piece in sections while it is still on the loom.
What do I mean by large pieces?
It is all relative right?
On this blog and website, I consider a large piece to be over 100 pieces wide.
I knowโฆ I knowโฆ some of you may consider pieces of 80 beads wide, or 80 rows to be large and they are!!
But to encourage the beading of even larger pieces I have started from the 100 beads mark and I offer patterns that go all the way up to 450 beads wide.
The tapestry that is 450 beads or rows wide measures 60.75 centimeters or 23.92 inches wide once completed.
You might be asking why should i bother.
Pleaseโฆ keep readingโฆ
Why Bother Weaving Larger Tapestries?
Small pieces work just as well.
The expense of the beads and the time taken to complete them is less too!!
You could make more pieces instead of just one big piece.
This is all very trueโฆ butโฆ
In my opinion, the larger piecesโฆ look so much better because they are less pixelated and have a clearer image, they have more detail and colour, and they have a wow factor.
Picture in your mind a small photo and the details that are in it, versus a large version of this same photo with more details and colours, and contrasts. The larger tapestries offer so much more to the eyes.
Here is an exampleโฆ
The clarity of the image gets better and better as the tapestry gets bigger.
Since I design custom patterns, I have put up an example on the website showing the difference between the several tapestry widths sizes to help with the decision-making process of which size to choose.
This will give you a better idea…
Follow this link to see these images better… the individual images zoom in a bit when you hover over them.
This table shows the difference in the details offered by increasing the number of columns, meaning the width of the tapestry.
Have a look at the difference in detail between the 100 columns and 400 columns.
You can see that the level of detail naturally increases as the number of columns increases. In the 400 beads or columns wide photo, the one on the far right, you can see the details in such clarity.
Now letโs say this was a tapestry of your late beloved cat.
Would it be worth all the trouble?
You might be thinkingโฆ
Sure I would love it and it might be worth the troubleโฆ
But how on earth would I be able to do it??
How long will it take???
Yes, I admit, the larger tapestries take longer but it is totally doable and in my opinion worth it.
BUT
I can help you and support you through your Journey!
You are not alone!
I have done huge pieces before and that is what I LOVE doing.
I enjoy all of it, even the managing of the warp threads once it is off the loom!
Iโve learned, adopted, modified, and invented methods and tricks along the way that I will be sharing with you along with my favourite toolsโฆ there is so much I want to share.
Subscribe to the newsletter if you havenโt already, Iโll let you know when a new post is up!
I remember staring at tapestries hung on my grandmotherโs walls to keep the cold and dampness of winter at bay.
Yes, in those days the tapestries served a purpose, as well as being beautiful works of art.
They were huge, and you could admire something different in them every time you looked. So many details, so many colours, in just one piece.
Truly a work of art.
I could go on but chances areโฆ. since you are reading this blogโฆ you are looking to, or are bead weaving large or larger pieces and I am just preaching to the choir!
Where Do I Go From Here?
